The student analyzes the characteristics of various types of texts (genres). Essential Questions
Students will read three novels by author Kate Dicamillo: Tiger Rising, Because of Winn Dixie, and The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane. Students will keep a reading log/journal for each novel, noting literary elements, i.e. characters, setting,problem/resolution, etc. Students will work in groups of two, using their reading log notes, to create a tri-Venn Diagram in PowerPoint comparing similarities and differences between the three novels. Students will then independently compose an essay supporting their character analysis. Questions:Predict how the character in Tiger Rising might react if he/she were in Opal from Because of Winn Dixie's situation. What would you have done differently if you found a dog in a grocery store? Predict how Opal would react to findig a stray cat instead of a dog?
