Engaging /
Essential Questions
  • Why do we need to be safe?

Authentic Learning

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities
  • Students will sort safe and unsafe pictures by cutting and pasting pictures under correct label and explaining why they placed them in that category.
  • We will then discuss why it is important to follow safety rules as part of having good character.                                                       Trustworthiness-if you are trustworthy you will be given more freedom to play with more materials-scissors.               Responsibility-It is your responsibility to follow the safety rules so that you do not get hurt or hurt others.                              Citizenship-you show good citizenship by taking care of all the materials in the classroom.                                                         Respect-we must respect others well being by being safe.
  • Read story Little Red Ridinghood and discuss safe actions and unsafe actions. Students will define safety in a discussion.
  • View Safe and Unsafe power point slide show and identify safe and unsafe actions with a thumbs up or down.
  • After viewing Safe and Unsafe slide show, students will demonstrate a safe action-crossing street correctly, walking in the halls, sitting in a chair correctly, and holding scissors correctly.  They will also use the pictures that we took of the students doing safe and unsafe actions and the drag a thumbs up or thumbs down picture to correctly picture.
  • List other ways that we can be safe at home, at the store, and other places outside of school
  • Suppose you could write up safety rules for school, shat would you write?
  • Students will use Word program to sort safe and unsafe pictures.
