Department Objectives

Objective 4

The student will demonstrate an understanding of motion, forces, and energy.

Lesson Overview

A brief summary of the lesson and the expected outcomes.

Overview

Students will research how sounds work, travel; how they are rated and the harmful effects of those at different levels culminating in a public awareness campaign.

Engaging Questions

The task asks students to show their "know how" on something important and challenging, not just their knowledge.

Engaging /
Essential Questions

If possible, have an interpreter of sign, great the class and give instructions using only sign to demonstrate what it is like to be deaf, or pass our ear plugs for students to use and speak very softly.

1-Teacher: speaks softly at first and gradually increases her/his volume:

           Can you hear me?

           Can you hear me now?

           Can you hear me now?

           Can you hear me now?

2- What causes sound?

3- How do we measure loudness?

4- At what point is sound too loud?

5- What are some causes of deafness?

6- What kinds of sounds can cause deafness?

7- How can we, as individuals, make others aware of the dangers?

Authentic Learning

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities
  • Students will research how sound is measured and rated. Then they will come up with a rating scale for mp3’s, iPods, stereos, etc…. as well as in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, library, etc.,
  • Recognize, using their observations, that sound can travel through a substance;
  • Recognize that sounds are caused by vibrations
  • Compile data gathered through investigation in order to record and present results,
  • using tally charts, tables, and labeled graphs produced by hand or with a computer
  • Describe the harmful effects of high noise levels and identify potential noise hazards at home or in the community
  • Communicate ideas and information for a variety of purposes and to specific audiences

  • During a class discussion, students must determine, using a Venn diagram on the tablet pc, the ratings and harmful effects of different volume levels.

  • They will then make posters, handouts, web pages, etc, of the information to be used around campus and they will receive extra credit if they can get their information placed in public areas. (must return a signed statement for verification)
