Lesson Overview

A brief summary of the lesson and the expected outcomes.

Overview

Students will write, design and create a Power Point Children Book to be used by elementary teachers. This book will need to include the following elements:

1. Original (character driven) children story written by student, must be at least 10 minutes long. Story must demonstrate one or more of the 6 pillars of character and contain the following elements:

  • main character
  • secondary characters
  • plot
  • location
  • one or more of the 6 pillars of character
  • beginning and climax
  • two conclusions:
    • one where good character was used to resolve the issue
    • one where lack of character was used to resolve the issue

2. Contain at least 25 slides, timed, with transitions.

  • Title Slide to include:
    • Title of Book
    • Author of Book
    • Cover Graphic
  • Body slides 2 - 12
  • Discussion Slide 13
  • Dual conclusion Slides 14-24
  • Credits Slide 25

 3. Slides must have:

  • word art
  • graphics
  • animation
  • transitions
  • text boxes with text
  • audio narration file

Engaging Questions

The task asks students to show their "know how" on something important and challenging, not just their knowledge.

Engaging /
Essential Questions
  1. How does the plot of the story create a character delima?
  2. How does this delima affect the lives of the individuals in the story?
  3. What issues do the characters in the story face and how would they use character traits to resolve the issues?
  4. How could you evaluate the different types of scenarios and how would those scenarios change the outcome of the plot?
  5. How could you create an alternate ending for the story where bad character was used?
  6. When designing your PowerPoint Children's book, what types of additional software could you use to aid in the design process? (i.e. audio, graphics, animation, etc.)

Authentic Learning

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities

Students will design and create a PowerPoint Children's book that will demonstrate how using good character can change the outcome of the plot. This Children's book can then be used in elementary schools to enhance character lessons. Each PowerPoint will have a character driven ending and an alternate ending where good character was not used. This will enhance the lesson by demonstrating how an individual's choice can take them down an alternate path.

The PowerPoint Children's book will have a stopping point in which a teacher can conduct a classroom discussion, and students can evaluate how different choices could possibly change the outcome of the story, before they view the two different endings.

Steps:

  1. Create the characters for your story - determine the main character and secondary characters for the story.
  2. Determine the setting for your story.
  3. Compose a children's story with two endings.
  4. Create a time-line depicting the beginning, climax and endings of the story.
  5. Create a story board for your story and alternate endings.
  6. Generate a PowerPoint depicting the story and the two endings.
  7. Create an audio file narrating the story to be used in your PowerPoint.
  8. Burn finished PowerPoint to a CD to be used at an Elementary school.
  9. Create a CD cover for your Children's book.
  10. Package, promote and present your Children's book.

High Level Thinking Processes

The task requires complex-thinking skills (critical/creative thinking, decision making, problem solving)

Comprehension - demonstrate their knowledge of different types of character traits, and compare them there every day actions.

Application - students will apply the knowledge learned about character traits to write a character driven story, with alternate endings to be used in the elementary campus.

Analysis - students will analyze how different pathways affect the outcome of the story.

Synthesis - Using the story the student will create a presentation style book for children ages 6 - 10.

Evaluation - Students will critique the children's book, the graphics, and the alternate endings to determine wheither or not the book should be recommended to be used by the Elementary school.

Differentiated Instruction

Instruction is tailored to the learning readiness, cultural background, interests, talents, and learning profiles of the students.

Differentiation Activities Adjusted Questions , Flexible Grouping , Tiered Instruction , Graphic Organizers ,
Description
  • Assignment will be adjusted by IEP's and for students who in gifted progams.
  • Flexible grouping will be arranged to benefit special needs students
  • Adjust questions to help students better understand the assignment
  • Adjust timeline for those who need it.
  • Used tiered instruction as to not confuse some students.
  • Use graphic organizers and checklist to keep students on task.

Technology Applications

Technology (computers, handhelds, software applications, Internet) is used in a seamless fashion to promote student learning.

Technology Applications

Students will need to research Character traits online by usings articles and news stories that can give them ideas on creating a character driven story.

Use applications as follows:

  • PowerPoint - presentation
  • Publisher, Fireworks or Adobe - create book cover
