Social Studies- 2.13A,B,C,2.17B,E13)  Citizenship. The student understands characteristics of good citizenship as exemplified by historic figures and ordinary people. The student is expected to:

(A)  identify characteristics of good citizenship such as a belief in justice, truth, equality, and responsibility for the common good;

(B)  identify historic figures such as Florence Nightingale, Paul Revere, and Sojourner Truth who have exemplified good citizenship; and

(C)  identify ordinary people who exemplify good citizenship.

(17)  Social studies skills. The student applies critical-thinking skills to organize and use information acquired from a variety of sources including electronic technology. The student is expected to:

(A)  obtain information about a topic using a variety of oral sources such as conversations, interviews, and music;

(B)  obtain information about a topic using a variety of visual sources such as pictures, graphics, television, maps, computer software, literature, reference sources, and artifacts;

(C)  use various parts of a source, including the table of contents, glossary, and index, as well as keyword computer searches, to locate information;

(D)  sequence and categorize information; and

(E)  interpret oral, visual, and print material by identifying the main idea, predicting, and comparing and contrasting.

Research 2 model citizens by groups that have demonstarted outstanding character.

Make a graphic organizer to compare these 2 model citizens. 

Designing and creating activities that will demonstrate the six pillars of character by them ex. Power Point, play, song, poem,chant, art exhibit, etc.

 Plan on how to present these activities to our school and community for example present to other classes, to the whole school, put it in our class website, present it to nursing homes, and possibly to other organizations and grade levels.

Which two citizens,of all the people you know or have studied, do you think would be   model citizens that has demonstrated and modeled the six pillars of character?

Organize in a graphic organizer the characteristics of two 2 model citizens and compare and contrast them. 3 or more characteristics are necessary.

How would you apply what you learned to develop your own character? Make a list of things you would do.

Plan, design, and create an activity to demostrate the six pillars of character by each group for ex. a play, a song, a chant, a powerpoint presentation, an art exhibit)

Plan on what  you could do to show  and communicate your group's Six Pillars of Character activity to the community and your 2 choices of Model citizens.( Avenue of Communication, ex. Power Point Presentation on our class website, presenting a play to a certain audience, etc.)

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities

Brainstorm citizens of the past and present  that have modeled  good pillars of character and give examples of events in their life that showed this.

Make a graphic organizer to compare two characteristic of 2 model citizens.

Make a list of things the student needs to do to immulate those 2 model citizens.

Students will plan to make activities like plays, songs, chants, poems, powerpoints presentations, art pieces, and other creative unique activities to show, model, and demonstrate the six pillars of character.

Students will plan to present their activities to the school and/or community by holding an exhibition, acting our a play, singing their songs and chants and making a recording, art exhibit, powerpoint presentation on our class website, presentation to PTA, and other such communition avenues.

2.Comprehension- Describe each pillar and give an example of each and how each of the model citizens demonstrated each.

3. Application-What would you apply of what you learned to develop your own good character? Make a list.

4.Analysis-Make a graphic organizer to compare and contrast 2 model citizens.

5.Synthesis- Think of a unique activitiy in which your group can communicate the six Pillars of Character. (Ex. a play, a chant, a song,a poem, art exhibit, and the like)

6.Evaluation- Each group will evaluate the other group's activities and judge whether the activity demonstrates correctly the pillars of character by voting on the best presentation.

Anchor Activities-Brainstorming to come up with 2 model citizens that they have learned about or know and will research them by groups.

Learning Centers-Computer center-for research and emailing, model citizens if they are still alive, microsoft word for writing final drafts of plays, songs, poems, etc. ; for making power points

 art center -for art exhibit, costumes and posters

research center- with encyclopedias and bibliographies

theater stage center-for practicing plays, songs, chants

 recording center -for recording songs and chants

writing center- for writing rough drafts of plays, songs, chants, poems, etc.

Flexible grouping- Will be in group of choice.

Exit cards- Will not start new activity until previous one is turned in.

Personal Agendas- Their choice of model citizens or historical models of citizenship

Interest Based Investigations- Research on their interests of character traits.

Graphic Organizers- For comparison of model citizens

Technology (computers, handhelds, software applications, Internet) is used in a seamless fashion to promote student learning.
