Lesson Overview

A brief summary of the lesson and the expected outcomes.

Overview

In this lesson students will learn what responsibility is and how they can be a responsible person.

While using the tablets we will as a class review the first few slides together from the Character Ed.Net resources: Responsiblity Lesson at: http://www.charactered.net/preview/lessons/responsibility-35.asp.

When finished discussing the student will complete the sceniros given on the website regarding what they person should do to act responsible in a given situation. A certificate can be printed to honor their acomplishment.

While working with a partner students will find and discuss articles they find in the local newspaper that shows how others are responsible for their own actions (how locan citizens may be rewarded or punished for their choices).

As a group of 3 or 4 students will take what they have learned about responsiblity and create one of the following: create a game (go fish, board game, crossword puzzle, etc...) or other types of activities (with approval students can create a movie, skit, play, puppet show) that will educate and get other kids involved. If approved, skits/puppet shows, and plays will be performed for other classes. Games will be distributed to other classes to complete as well.

Engaging Questions

The task asks students to show their "know how" on something important and challenging, not just their knowledge.

Engaging /
Essential Questions

Are you a responsible person?

What are some traits of a person that is responsible?

Define responsibilty in your own words.

When you tell someone you will do something, is that person is counting on you to do the job the best you can and complete it? Why?

What does it mean to be responsible?

How can you be responsible at school and at home?

Why should we be held responsible for our actions and choices?

What can we do as a class to show how responsible we are?

Authentic Learning

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities

As a class discuss right and wrong choices may be and consequences that may result from each. Students will get examples of positive and negative behaviors and the consequences from newspaper articles. Ask student how to handle the problem in a more appropriate manner. (For example: A person steals money and is captured by police and sent to jail. If someone needs money, what can they do to acquire it legally and in a positive way? They could get a job, borrow it from a friend, etc.)

End productStudents will take what they have learned about responsiblity and create a game (go fish, board game, crossword puzzle, etc...) or other types of activities (with approval, movie, skit, play, puppet show) that will educate and get other kids involved. Games will be distributed to other classes to complete as well to help get them involved and educated on responsibility.

Evaluation, Analysis, & Synthesis: Students will evaluate each articles situation and identify the actions and the consequeces/rewards of them. Students will need to communicate to teacher and class how things would have been different if the person was acting responsibly in the situation. How would they have acted if they were in that persons shoes? Would they have made the same choices? Should they be held responsible for their actions?

Students will need to evaluate what analyze important concepts and identify things that they think younger students should know about responsibility in order to create a productive and meaningful activity for them to do.

They will take what they have learned about responsiblity and create games (or other types of activities, with approval) that will educate and get other kids involved.
