Learning Objectives

TEKS /
Student Expectations
(10) Science concepts. The student knows that species can change through generations and that the instructions for traits are contained in the genetic material of the organisms. The student is expected to: (A) identify that sexual reproduction results in more diverse offspring and asexual reproduction results in more uniform offspring; (B) compare traits of organisms of different species that enhance their survival and reproduction; and (C) distinguish between dominant and recessive traits and recognize that inherited traits of an individual are contained in genetic material.
Targeted TAKS /
Department Objectives
(6.11, 7.10, 8.11) Science concepts. The student knows that traits of species can change through generations and that the instructions for traits are contained in the genetic material of the organisms. The student is expected to (A) identify that change in environmental conditions can affect the survival of individuals and of species (8.11); (B) distinguish between inherited traits and other characteristics that result from interactions with the environment (8.11); and (C) make predictions about possible outcomes of various genetic combinations of inherited characteristics (8.11).

Lesson Overview

A brief summary of the lesson and the expected outcomes.

Overview n/a

Engaging Questions

The task asks students to show their "know how" on something important and challenging, not just their knowledge.

Engaging /
Essential Questions
1. What is cloning? 2. Are there different types of cloning? 3. How can cloning technologies be used? 4. What animals have been cloned? 5. Can organs be cloned for use in transplants? 6. What are the risks of cloning? 7. Should humans be cloned? 8. Will Human Cloning change the natural ways of reproduction and genetic traits?

Authentic Learning

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities n/a

High Level Thinking Processes

The task requires complex-thinking skills (critical/creative thinking, decision making, problem solving)

Bloom's Taxonomy

Knowledge , Analysis , Comprehension , Synthesis , Application , Evaluation

Description Knowledge- students will be able to define Human Cloning. Comprehension-students will engage in a general discussion about human cloning. Students will engage in a general dicussion of the ethical and practical arguments both for and against human cloning. Application- students will read the Article Good Science? Bad Idea? and using a graphic organizer they will orgainze thoughts, ideas, and opinions about human cloning in the article. (Resource for later) Analysis- Students will engage in research and review of literature about human cloning. Synthesis-Students will use the internet, related text magazine articles, medical journals etc. to develop their position for or against human cloning. Evaluation-Students (7th grade science)will defend their positions for or against human cloning by presenting a campaign (poster, buttons etc.) Pre-AP 7th grade science will defend their postion through a Paideia Seminar (circle discussion) for or against human cloning.

Differentiated Instruction

Instruction is tailored to the learning readiness, cultural background, interests, talents, and learning profiles of the students.

Differentiation Activities Anchor Activities , Learning Centers , Personal Agendas , Graphic Organizers ,
Description 7th Grade Science- Students will plan a advertising campaign for or against Cloning. The Ad campaingns can be: Posters (poster board or large paper) Buttons-Paper or real Pamphelets- Microsoft publisher or handmade Television or radio commercials Magezine or Newspaper Advertisements Students needing assistance will be given assistance in SAC, peer helper, or by teacher. Pre-AP 7th Grade Science Students will plan a Paideia Seminar (circle discussion)for or against Cloning. Each student will need to prepare a paper containing notes about their postion etc.

Technology Applications

Technology (computers, handhelds, software applications, Internet) is used in a seamless fashion to promote student learning.

Concepts/TopicsWill human cloning change this natural process. The student knows that species can change through generations and that the instructions for traits are contained in the genetic material of the organisms. The student is expected to: identify that sexual reproduction results in more diverse offspring and asexual reproduction results in more uniform offspring;compare traits of organisms of different species that enhance their survival and reproduction; and distinguish between dominant and recessive traits and recognize that inherited traits of an individual are contained in genetic material.

EBAMDay 1 Students will engage in a general discussion about what is human cloning? Students and teacher will engage in a general discussion of the ethical and practical arguments both for and against Human Cloning. The discussion will be started by teacher citing examples of arguments on each side of the question. Day 2 Students will read the Article Cloning Good Science? Bad Idea? Students will use a graphic organizer to aid their comprehension and organize their thoughts about their thoughts and opinions about Cloning from the article. (Used later for resource) Day 3-6 Students will engage in research using the internet and related text, magazine articles,& medical journals etc to develop thier for or against Cloning and should be prepared to defend their choices. 7th Grade Science- Students will plan a advertising campaign for or against Cloning. The Ad campaingns can be: Posters (poster board or large paper) Buttons-Paper or real Pamphelets- Microsoft publisher or handmade Television or radio commercials Magezine or Newspaper Advertisements Pre-AP 7th Grade Science Students will plan a Paideia Seminar (circle discussion)for or against Cloning. Each student will need to prepare a paper containing notes about their postion etc. Day 7 7th Grade Science Students will present thier campaign to the class. Pre-AP 7th Grade Science Students will engage in a Paideia Seminar (class discussion) on Cloning. Students will demonstrate the follwoing Character Traits: 7th Grade Science- Respect for the other students ideas Caring for individuals and Society Courage for sharing ideas Responsibilty in participation Self Discipline in refraining from interrupting another students presentation. Pre-AP 7th Grade Science Respect for the other students ideas Caring for individuals and Society Courage for sharing ideas Responsibilty in participation Self Discipline in refraining from taking over the discussion.

Performance TaskStudents will understand that there are ethical and practical arguments in favor of cloning and against cloning. Students will show through the use of media and technology that science knowledge is shared, critiqued, and trives on scrutiny by other scientist and the public. Students will discuss their research and ideas about Cloning through an advertising campaign or Paideia Seminar.
