Knowledge , Analysis , Comprehension , Synthesis , Application , Evaluation

Description After reading The Empty Pot and discussing the definitions of honesty, respect and perseverence, students will discuss and evaluate why the 3 character traits of honesty, respect and perseverence helped the main character. They will evaluate reasons as to why these character traits are important. They will apply prior knowledge and interpret what the story is implying. They will create a flower that shows all of the reasons that these traits would be important in their life.

Differentiated Instruction

Instruction is tailored to the learning readiness, cultural background, interests, talents, and learning profiles of the students.

Differentiation Activities Adjusted Questions , Graphic Organizers ,
Description All questions will be modified or enriched per student need. All of their answers will be directed to come from their personal experiences or observations of why certain character traits would have importance. Every students' answers will vary depending on their ability to analyze, but all will be prompted in the direction of self-reflection. They will use graphic organizers in which levels can be modified during utilization as needed by the student as to enrichment or simplification.

Technology Applications

Technology (computers, handhelds, software applications, Internet) is used in a seamless fashion to promote student learning.

Technology Applications Campus laptops will be issued to each student so they can each create their own virtual flower. They will use inspiration to organize ideas under the 3 main topics, and to create their virtual flowers.

Concepts/TopicsAfter reading The Empty Pot, students will discuss and evaluate why the 3 character traits of honesty, respect and perseverence helped the main character. They will evaluate reasons as to why these character traits are important. They will apply prior knowledge and interpret what the story is implying. They will create a flower that shows all of the reasons that these traits would be important in their life. The story is about a boy's decision to be honest and relates well to any child's life. These character traits fall under the Character Ed. Pillars of Trushworthiness (honesty), Respect, and Responsibility (perseverence).

EBAMFollowing the content and themes in the TEKS for this lesson, students will create a flower that shows all of the reasons that these traits would be important in their own life. The story is about a boy's decision to be honest and work hard in a situation instead of cheating and is rewarded in the end. It relates well to any child's life. Specific actual situations that students face each day in school will be discussed in order to create reasons for the petals as to why certain character traits are important to do well in life. Each child will follow the e.b.a.m. guidelines in creating their flowers. Focusing on an individual problem in their own life, thinking about the current conditions of their situation, thinking and discussion of how their decisions affect them and others aroung them, deciding what character traits they can use in their life (taking action), and getting feedback from the teacher and other students after the class presentations of their flowers.

Performance TaskAfter reading the story, the Empty Pot, students will be directed to follow the rubric guidelines to create a flower that has 9 petals. (In the story, the flower is sybolic of the boy's honesty). On each petal, they will list one reason why the given character trait is important for a person to possess. The rubric clearly outlines that to get full credit, 3 petals must be present for each character trait of honesty, respect, and responsibility. Much discussion, feedback and evaluation of the story will preceed the actual creation of the flower. This is the part that involves teacher modeling of specific character traits. It will be driven by the students questions and inquiry. Feedback will also be given after each student's presentation to the class of the flower using the presentation technology of the classroom. It is the creation of the flower and the application of it afterwards that involves the students with the community outside of the classroom. They are to apply the concepts in their flowers to their next (and many more) situations in life, whether it be a homwork assignment, a chore at home, or a request by a parent, teacher, or friend. By utilizing the TEKS to analyze the story and character traits, the students (by using e.b.a.m. action model) create a plan that they will utilize in life from now on. This lesson is student centered and applicable to real situations on a daily basis.
