Lesson Overview

A brief summary of the lesson and the expected outcomes.

Overview n/a

Engaging Questions

The task asks students to show their "know how" on something important and challenging, not just their knowledge.

Engaging /
Essential Questions
Why is it important to learn how to count? We have to count money, what would happen if you did not know how to count? Is it important to know the different coins and how much each is worth? What if you needed something and you did not have enough money to get it? How would you feel? How can we show other teachers/schools that charity fundraising is an educational experience?

Authentic Learning

The task reflects what people might actually do in the real-world; including real life issues, themes, and problems.

Activities n/a
Related Character Pillars

High Level Thinking Processes

The task requires complex-thinking skills (critical/creative thinking, decision making, problem solving)

Bloom's Taxonomy

Knowledge , Analysis , Comprehension , Synthesis , Application

Description Knowledge - identify the coins. Comprehension - understand how much each coin is worth. Application - students count the coins using the 100's as a guide. Analysis - students are able to sort the coins into groups based on the attributes of the coins (heads, tails, size, color, etc) Sythesis - students will create a multimedia project (w/ teacher's assistance)demonstrating the educational value in charity fundraising. Character Traits: Caring - students learn about caring in their Monday meeting. Caring is also revisited during Character education class on Tuesdays. Class discussion on how our Pennies for Patients project demonstrates "caring".

Differentiated Instruction

Instruction is tailored to the learning readiness, cultural background, interests, talents, and learning profiles of the students.

Differentiation Activities Learning Centers , Adjusted Questions , Learning Contracts , Tiered Instruction ,
Description Adjusted Questioning - questions are adjusted for individual students. Tiered Instruction - opens with introduction of our Character word of the week: Caring in the Monday meeting. Then move into introduction of the project and begin working on the project. End with the culminating task: the multimedia project. Learning Centers - students are able to work with coins and practice counting money using the 100's chart.

Technology Applications

Technology (computers, handhelds, software applications, Internet) is used in a seamless fashion to promote student learning.

Concepts/TopicsSorting Counting

EBAM(At calendar time every day, students learn about the different coins - what they look like and how much they are worth.) 1. On Monday, students will gather on the rug to discuss our Character word of the week: Caring. Explain to students our campus will be participating in a charity fundraiser to raise money for children with Leukemia. 2. Students will watch a Charlie Brown video sent to us by the charity society so students understand what Leukemia is. 3. As students bring in money from home, they will get with a partner and sort out the coins. Then they will use a 100's chart to count the pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. (Parents are asked to come in and assist the students with counting the money.) 4. Students will create (w/teacher assistance) a multimedia project to share with teachers/schools about charity fundraising. Multimedia project will include narration about the purpose of our Pennies for Patients project and what they have learned about money, counting, and sorting while doing the project.

Performance TaskStudents will create (with the teacher's assistance)a multimedia project to share with other teachers/schools demonstrating the value of charity fundraising in an educational setting.
